[The woman that appears on the screen appears frustrated, her hair red and shorn close to her scalp and her lilac dress half-damp from momentary unsteadiness in the bay. There are dark, damp splotches up the front of it. Regardless, she carries herself like some kind of royalty]

I am Medusa.

[Her speech is measured, but it almost feels like she might be trying to be more personable. It just isn't going well. It would help, potentially, if she were smiling, but she doesn't have it in her today.]

Since this is my only method of communication at this time, I wanted to make my presence known. [She takes a deep breath, expression still fixed.]

I'm sure that given everything I have seen so far you have heard this before, but this is not a good time. No offense meant, of course, to our hosts.

[Oh, it was meant.]

[ Not her world, so of course, it shouldn't be her problem. Dorothy was curious, but did not pry. ]

Not quite a month, now.

[ It hadn't been long, but it had certainly been long enough. ]

A month.

[She repeated the words softly, like she was trying to wrap her head around the idea of that. Of being separated from Black Bolt for that long, stewing on problems that were out of her reach. Had she ever gone that long without seeing him, since they had met?]

You're going to tell me that it's normal to be here for a lot longer than that if I ask, aren't you?

[ Very simply: ] Yes.

[ There's a long pause. ]

I'm sorry.

It's fine.

[It was a lie, plain and simple, automatic.]

If, when I do go back - whenever that might be - it's as if I was never here, then that's fine. It's...doable.

I tell myself that, too.

[ But at least it was partially reassuring. If ... if they didn't actually notice she ever left, then it was ok. Wasn't it? ]

[There was a feeling of kinship in that, in a way. Empathy, if nothing else.]

Who were you, before you came here? What did you do? You don't have to answer, obviously. I'm not entirely certain why I'm asking to tell you the truth.

[It was just a little snippet of honesty, out there in the open.]

[ Considers. Decides to tell the truth. ]

I was a maid and assistant to the butler, to repay a debt.

I also helped a Negotiator. That was by my choice.

[ ... She has no idea what to call her capacity, helping with the Big O. Her ... particular function there was too new. Was that part of "helping a Negotiator"? ]

What did you do?

As in a hostage negotiator? Or some kind of business negotiations?

[They were the only options she could think of. Either way, it seemed like a fairly impressive change in position.]

[The correction, the stress on it seemed more directed to herself than Dorothy. Like she was trying to stay firm of that belief, or remind someone else who wasn't there.]

[ A pause. It suddenly occurs to her - perhaps this wasn't a role, in her world? ]

If two parties are in conflict, so long as both of them behave professionally, he will Negotiate for them.

[ She actually had a good deal of skepticism for the 'professionally' part of that, considering what they've dealt with, but. ]

This includes hostage situations, or retrieval of stolen goods. It also includes employee severance, or reconciling estranged persons.

[ It only sometimes concluded in a fight using giant robots, but really, that was an outlier.

There was no real royalty in Paradigm, but the word was a powerful enough concept that the Memories of such a thing lingered. ]

... We're still who we are, in this place, even if our responsibilities no longer exist.

That's very interesting.

[And it was for all that they were lacking, for the majority, conflicts that would require such services in Attilan.]

From what I've seen of the humans, they would do well to adopt that idea.

[It seemed rare that they saw anything but strife in what was broadcast, acts of violence in and out of war...]

I know. The problem is that there is someone at home who would take that from me, out of - out of petty jealousy and spite.

[ Faintly curious: ] You're not human?

[ And not judging at all, of course, considering both what she was and who she knew here.

She considers this with a pause. She doesn't know this woman's politics, or if she made a good ruler. But she can offer the truth. ]

People who have left this place, and then returned, say time doesn't pass in our worlds, while we are here.

So, your ... kingdom ... will be as you left it.

[ She hesitated over the word, but she's sure she found the right one. ]

I'm an Inhuman. I tell you this because I do not believe you are human either. There was a noise you made before, when you moved. Am I correct?

[She doesn't quite smile but there's a softening to her expression, something like curiosity - even if it was mostly a case of her distracting herself.]

I am glad for that, still. I can plan, while I'm here, and upon my return I can see to rectifying the injustices that have been committed.

[ She had been playing up her robotic traits because Medusa had been annoying her, but this wasn't presently the case.

Still curious: ] What do you mean?

[The concept was a familiar enough one, though as far as she was aware none had been created at this level so far. But things were different here, they were different in a lot of places. Her eyebrows raised, but she didn't question it.]

[There was only a moment's hesitation before she answered.] There was a coup.

[ Politics, not ... discrimination against non-humans, or something. Unless it was a coup because she wasn't human. Dorothy didn't have enough data.

Her city's politics had soured her to much of the subject, but she would still observe, listen, ask. ]

Past tense. However. You're worried the threat remains.

The tense may have been an error on my part. The coup was started by King Black Bolt's own brother. He sits, still, on his stolen throne, my sister his captive and the rest of us stranded on Earth. Separated, and with no ready way home to face him. He is hunting us, and no doubt spreading lies to our people in our absence.

[She held herself together firmly as she told the story.]

These are not his only crimes, either, but they are enough.

[ The name, of course, flew over her head, but she understood the rest well enough. ]

You can plan. You have a lot of time, here.

[ A pause ]

You are certainly determined enough.

[ The biggest problem, of course, would be retaking the seat of power without risking the sister. Or, at least, that's where her priority would be - which was likely why she had no interest in politics. ]

Yes, I intend to make good use of it.

[It was the only positive thing in all of this. She would have preferred Black Bolt there, even Karnak, someone to assist with the process at least. She would make do.]
