Oh, they find their ways in. There's honestly nothing a demon enjoys more than wreaking havok on the Material Plane. Usually someone summons them. And usually someone else has to come and put them back. If we're lucky, the damage is minimal.

I've heard the term 'demon' before, but I didn't imagine they'd be real creatures, immaterial or not.

How do they manage to gain a physical form if they themselves are not physical?

[Her brow draws together in a sight puzzled frown.]

Alright, so there are several planes of existence, with the Prime Material Plane as the center. The Outer Plane is where the Abyss is- the place where demons are from- and is connected to the Prime Material by the Astral Plane. But that connection isn't direct, which is why a demon has to be summoned to get there. Once there it can bring more, but it's limited by how powerful the demon is.

When a demon is destroyed on the Prime, it's banished back to the Abyss, and can't be brought to the Prime again for a certain period of time. Usually around one hundred years.

Now these planes, safe for the Astral are very much physical. And house numerous races and creatures, not limited to Fiends. There's Elementals, Salamanders, Eladrin, Celestials, and it goes on and on.

I don't understand. What is the difference between the Outer Plane and the Prime Material Plane? By the wording, one would imagine that one is a world of physical creatures and constructs, and the other a world of mere power and essence. Are they merely two adjacent dimensions?

Why can a demon not return to the Material Plane after it is destroyed? What keeps it trapped within the Abyss?

[She misses Gorion rather keenly, just then. He'd know all these answers with immediate and powerful enthusiasm. Or even Haer'Dalis, though the latter would likely revel in making things all the more complex.]

You're making me wish is paid more attention in Cosmology lessons!

Let's see... Think of the term "Prime" as short for "Primary". It is largely a point of view, as most in other places would consider themselves on the Prime Material. But there are places that see what I've labeled here, as the Prime Material as well. Creatures in the Outer planes and also the City of Doors, Sigil, consider my home plane the Prime.

THe meaning of Prime I am familiar with, of course. It is understandable that various denizens of the other planes would find theirs to be centric.

My curiosity lies in the use of the word material.

If all planes are Material aside from the Astral Plane, then why not refer to them as Prime Material and Lesser Material?

... I am aware the question may seem a touch pedantic, I can assure you that is not my intention, but it's curious to me. Are there physical differences between the two worlds?

I'm not quite mage or scholar enough to answer that, to your satisfaction, I think.

What I can say is that, I find the Abyssal layers very hostile, not just in its denizens. I've seen them look like stretches of nothingness, broken up by pock marked strips of stone, or rocky deserts, with flowing seas and rivers of lava. The Air Plane is predominantly just open sky. But I recall there are some that look mostly normal as well.

These all sound like planets. Are they other dimensions, with other planets within those dimensions? Entire universes within each plane? Or are they like here-

Where they are a self contained pocket?

[She hesitates just slightly.]

Upon arriving here, I'd say it would be less confusing than I would have believed before now.

The Prime Matieral plane however, your home plane. This plane contains an entire universe, correct? A moon, stars, planets beyond yours?

Yes, that's exactly right.

[Well, at least she was making some kind of sense to him. That was a relief!]

And other places also have those, like the Abeiran Material Plane, which is the twin of the Prime Material.

This twin plane would be more like a full neighboring dimension then, rather than these partial planes such as the Outer and Astral. Is this correct as well?

And if that is the case, would the Abeiran Material plane have other surrounding partial planes? Outer and Astral?

Mm, not exactly. I mean there are theories that it is fully a twin copy, and has its own twin adjoining planes, but it can't be proven. And there are equally valid theories that suggest it exists in a pocket of its own, and shares our sun, and other bits of our Cosmology. The only definitive time we know is that we only touch against one of each plane, and have not seen any duplicates, thus far.

Has no one ventured to it before then?

If it shares a sun, it sounds less like a full dimension and more merely like a planet.

Well, the Sundering was something done on a very high up divine scale, and so we can't really go there. Though I imagine the Planar Sphere has the capability.

Generally that's the way of life. I imagine how things work in your world would be just as puzzling for me.

Of which, may I just say, just because I haven't asked, doesn't mean I'm not terribly curious.
