... So he collected his communicator. And the money he'd woken up beside. And then he consulted the hologram, memorizing every word. He went outside, and grabbed the appropriate pamphlets, reading it all very carefully, noting well the map.

At some point, anyone down by the bay would find him sitting, calm, at least by all appearances, slowly scrolling through the communicator, reading, listening to, and watching every single post he could access.

Granted, if anyone came near, they'd find themselves being addressed.]

[And there he is, looking calm, cool and confident. Still outside, apparently, the sounds of street traffic make that pretty clear]

You know... He's not even surprised that Sanzo might not know the year. Not because he assumed the human was just dumb.

Rather... well lord only knew how long Sanzo had actually been here. Might have just lost track.

"It's fine, it's not entirely necessary for me to know. It's simply for comparisons sake." So stop stressing about that.

"Could you tell me more about youkai?"

Sanzo wasn't stressing about it, he just had been struck with the realization that he hadn't looked at a calendar in... a while, on Earth. Or even a recent newspaper! It was similar to the feeling one had when having to do math to figure out one's own age.

"Probably. What do you want to know about them?"

"Someone else here has mentioned demons, and how that their own plane is separate from earth itself.

Is this the case with yours?

Or are they native to the planet?"

"So far as I know, they were made at the same time as everything else," Sanzo flicked ash off his cigarette again, "yin and yang, the concept of light and dark balancing each other."

He didn't believe youkai were inherently evil, but that they carried something dark in them was impossible to deny. Something dark that the minus wave had twisted up and pulled out of so many of them.

"Then they're simply another species." That was a little easier to understand, at least. Just another race on earth. It wasn't unheard of, for multiple sapient races to share the same planet. Earth was honestly one of the few where this wasn't the case.

"Yin and Yang... This is a spiritual concept, isn't it?"

"--Yeah."

And Sanzo tipped his head back to blow a perfect smoke ring up into the sky.

"...Seems to be how it all works, though."

"Which is which?" A pause.

"Forgive me if the answer to this question is far too long, I'm aware that religion requires a far more complex answer than a mere sentence, but could you describe the concept to me?"

"'Tch, nothing complex about it."

Sanzo, that's not helpful.

"Yin's dark, yang's light."

No, it was never that simple, of course, but like hell if Sanzo was going to admit that. In his experience, the simpler you kept this shit, the better; people over-complicating it was where they tended to go wrong.

"Can't see without light. But light without dark is just as blinding."

See? What a good priest.
