Purgatorio ❧ Act I | The arrival of the Mother of All [Audio]

[Eve had arrived over a week ago. She had time to look at the many beasts that loomed in all five cities. She had also heard from the monsters about the many things that had happen during the past few months. She's certainly intrigued. But more than anything, she's just pleased she has another world to let her children grow and be happy. However, she can also feel the presence of the angels in this world - not that she felt entirely threatened by them.

When the recording starts, everyone will hear some static before a young and slightly amused feminine voice speaks over it.]

Your father has left you.

Abandoned you in the hands of angels and spirits. But a mother never abandons her children. I'll show you.

[So many ways the puns could go with this but Spirit is mostly referring to the fact that he has definitely not left his daughter alone. ~~Talk about missing the analogy, hm?~~]

I'm genuinely sorry to hear that.

But I'm sure she had great reasons to do so. Perhaps it was to protect you, her child. After all, a mother's life is worthless, if sacrificing her life would ensure the continuity of her child.

I'm a mother. I know that I will do anything, even die, so long as I know my children will live on.

And who, exactly, are your children?

I have many children, as they have many children after them. Some, I doubt you know, if you're not used to meeting with what most people call, myths.

I'm familiar with myths, but most of the people here aren't familiar with the ones I am.

[Time to start with basics.] So, I'd assume you know of dragons.

Know of? You say that like dragons aren't supposed to be real. In my world, they are. They're very real. My great-grandfather had a pet dragon that he rode into battle.

In some worlds, they believe my children to be non-existent.

I take it from your words that your world co-existed happily with my children.

They were hunted to extinction before I was born. And I highly doubt the dragons of my world were your children.

Regardless, whatever world I go to, or what realm I might wake up to, dragons are still very precious to me. I love them so.

And, I am highly saddened by that news. How can your world treat my children so cruelly.

I don't know. My ancestors had some pretty barbaric practices.

There was some crackling of the audio before a very young sounding voice came through. "Hello? Hello? Is this working?" Some more fiddling...

"Sis and I left mother behind. She didn't abandon us. I don't remember anything about her before leaving though. I gave those memories to the computer to get our house back. But that's okay. When we left she said 'take care of your sister' and that's what I did. She would understand."

Yes, of course.

A mother would always understand. If you were to live, and you protected your sister, nothing could make a mother happier.

"Yeah!" The voice seemed to brighten some. "But I remember mother from when we were leaving and when she visited after. And you don't sound like her. So you're not my mother... I bet you're a nice lady though. You sound nice."

"I am not. But I could be...", a pause. Then she resumes with a lightly haunting tone. "I am nice. Specially to my children. I have their best interest at heart"

"That's good. Mothers should be nice to their children. And you probably can't be my mother though. I'm not human. I'm a youkai. Youkai are born from other youkai or from nature or from universal laws and concepts. But it's super nice of you to offer and I really appreciate it!"

For a moment, she just laughs, then smiles for the young woman. "I've never had a human child before."

"Ohhh Really?" Her voice held quite a bit of genuine curiosity. "Then what are you? Are you a youkai or a goddess?"

Another smile. "Just a mother. Nothing more.", she said with a hint of pride in her tone.

"That's strange. Normally mothers are something in addition to being mothers. You must have a very strange life Miss. But you seem nice enough."

The voice that responded was cold, though there was a hint of irritation there.

"Not all parents love their children. I would have died in the streets had My Lady not taken me in. Though I did not meet them I'm fairly certain I can say my parents did not care about me. No woman wants to be the mother of an allegedly 'demonic' child."

"It is not fair for you to say that." A pause.

"A mother should love a child no matter what her child is to be. I know I would love you, even if you were the most evil thing in the entire universe"

"Well you aren't my mother. Telling me this will not change anything. I have My Lady. That is enough."

"And I am not evil. Or, rather, I was not born evil, though being raised by a devil has led me to do things that might label me as such. At least in the eyes of humans."

"It's likely I was abandoned merely because I had strange powers. It's not uncommon in more primitive cultures to... dispose of children seen as defective or corrupt."

"Loyalty, something rare these days", she said with a short smile. "that's what I mean. Those types of experiences will make people think you're evil. But I don't think you are. At least, I am guessing you are not"

"That's despicable. A mother should never abandon their child. Most especially if they are as unique as you are."

"Loyalty and trust are things that have value beyond measure. Hence the value of my devotion and My Lady's trust in me. Likewise why I am so quick to mistrust someone like you. You seem to want people to view you as a mother, but even a real mother has to earn the love of her child."

"And no, I'm not evil." Her voice darkened. "I am human and loyal to My Lady. My Lady is a devil and I will do what I can to please her, be it simple chores or taking the lives of her enemies."

"Unique? Hardly. Strange happenings caused many to be born with strange abilities. Some were praised, some discarded. My ability indirectly makes people scared or uneasy, especially when its not kept in check. It was only luck that saved me."

"True, and I shall show you that I am worth trusting", she said patiently.

"But humanity believes devils and demons are made of pure evil, do they not? It simply how they view it I suppose"

"And, is that not unique by itself?"

"Perhaps you will, perhaps you will not. I will not pass judgement until the effort has been made. It is not my place. Till then I shall remain wary."

"Evil is subjective. My Lady preys upon humans but, at the same time, she was willing to show mercy to a human child in whom she saw potential and who all others shunned. She has restitched my fate according to her whims. She has trained me to be an efficient and loyal servant and guard. I suppose, in that way, I am unique. Rather, it is merely my existence that is not.
