Didn't get to wet, I hope? And not too tired, either? If not, it's about a half hour's walk. Ready to go?

[Link tilted his head, taking the towel.]

I don't mind walking. I've walked all across Hyrule and climbed a mountain.

[Wouldn't want to..well, it's summer so being wet would probably be a relief.]

Mountain climbing! Goodness, you must hail from a...unique land.

[Ted just starts to take inventory. A sword and shield, and a pretty hefty one at that. That's both very romantic and very troubling.]

What on earth for? Swashbuckling ogres and trolls, perhaps? I can't help but notice your equipment.

[Hopefully law enforcement notices plainly exposed swords a little less]

I'm helping my friend, Princess Zelda. We're gonna save Hyrule from an evil man. Her dad won't listen to her, so we made a plan.

[Link shifted his shoulders.]

I had a smaller shield, but, it got burnt up. Death Mountain is also a volcano. It doesn't seem to bother the Gorons, but, it can get a little hot.

[Ted gives too much trust to believe it's just some kid explaining his pretend play. He's not sure whether to be really worried or really jealous of such adventures. Maybe both.]

Death Mountain!? Well thank goodness only your shield burned away! I see you've a ready replacement. It...seems well made. What were you thwarting with it? The evil man?

[Yeah, tell him about all the monsters that wanted Link dead. That'll soothe.]

[Oddly enough, Link does seem happier recounting those battles.
He's a weird kid.]

A dodongo. A huuuuuge one. It was blocking all of the Gorons from the cavern where they got their rocks for eating. And they were starving. I threw bombs into its mouth and PKOOOOOOOW! It blew up.

And a big ugly parasite thing that was inside a fish god. I killed it with a boomerang and my sword.

[Ted's slowly getting absorbed into this increasingly dangerous boys' life. It isn't that weird; if he did that at that age he'd never shut up about it either. And probably put his parents in an early grave, too. He's somewhere in-between now.]

"Bombs!? That's, heh, certainly one way to dispatch a monster. I'm surprised there weren't any grown-ups to help you. Sounds like a serious plight those Gorons had. Well, I'm very glad you were there to sort it out."

[No, don' t encourage him]

"Goodness! So you had to go inside this fish deity to sort things out? That must have been very...visceral. Glad you weren't digested or something! He must have been grateful for cleaning him out, just the same."

[Link shrugged.]

Grownups wouldn't listen to Zelda. So, I had to fix things on my own.

It was kinda gross inside him, but, I had to go in, because he swallowed the Zora princess.

I thought that was just the king; I know how useless those in power can be. But I'd have though there'd be someone...

[He cleared his throat. He admires Link's can-do attitude, but he's pre-tty iffy about seeing much more of it.]

Well, the adults here are a cut above. Myself included, if that's not too boastful. Should you encounter any Dodongos or fish-bound parasites, you let me know and I'll clean their clocks tout-suite.

...wait the fish did that? What on earth for?

His brain wasn't right because of the parasite. He sucked her up when she brought him his offering.

...and I think she was hiding from her dad too. I had to talk her into leaving.

A silver tongue and a good sword arm. What can't you do?

[Well, as much as Ted's misgivings might be, he can't help but be interested in Link's adventures, glad that he's managed to survive all of them. He fills the rest of the trip's time that way, until they finally reach the K&H Home.]

...ah, we've arrived. Thank you for being obedient and coming this way with me. Do you need anything? They ought to see to the essentials in there, of course, but just in case.

[As for his limitations? Reading and writing beyond a first grade level. Woe to anyone who tries to put him in school.]

I can probably look in the grass for rupees. How much does it cost to stay here? Should I maybe find a tree or something to sleep in? In case it's too expensive?

[Feral child.]

[Challenge accepted. Eventually. Maybe. He gives Link a confused look, then laughs.]

Oh, no, haha, no, it's not quite like that. This is a charitable place where children are looked after, for they cannot look after themselves. Well, I suppose you can, enough for others too, but it's best not to assume. Didn't you want for fellows your own age? Well, here they are. Don't worry, it doesn't cost anything but more of your agreeableness. I think we'd all rest easier if you rested here.

[Probably forever, just to be on the safe side.]

[That was interesting. Why were they all housed together? Didn't regular kids have parents and stuff?]

Yes; I especially think you'll like Tony, another who likes to bite off more than he can chew. I believe you could be fast friends.

Ah ha, ah...probably in the same position as the Great Deku Tree. That is...everyone arrives here alone, and children are no exception, I'm afraid. So we like to gather them together to keep watch over the especially vulnerable among us, you understand.

[Link nodded, wondering if another kid would actually even like him.

Then, his expression went a little bleak.]

Oh, they're dead. That happens. Guess kids would need some place to live if that happened.

I can take care of 'em.

[Man this kid moves fast.]

The Great Deku Tree died? Oh Link, I'm so sorry. I had no idea. That must've been hard to bear. What I meant was that people are just...separated. That's probably why you couldn't find this Navi of yours.

But I'm heartened for all that; I was just about to ask that very thing. If you could look after the others, I mean.

Oh, that's good! I mean, I'd hate to think everyone here came here because their friends and families were dead.

[Link did relax a little.]

Sure, I can do that! I like helping people.

[He has to wonder if Link is happily morbid or morbidly happy]

That's wonderful! Such an inspirational youth! [That inspires him to rub that ridiculous cap and give an encouraging slap on the back...or shield.]

Really, Link, I'm glad to hear it; a lot of children have come through as of late, and I was starting to worry whether they had common company and safety enough. Just, ah, try not to scare anyone too much with that blade of yours. Be responsible, now. And stay out of trouble! Unless trouble finds you, then I trust you'll know what to do.

I'd say more about whom you're going to meet in there, but I bet you'd rather see for yourself. I know I'll be seeing you all soon; I like to make weekly visits and entertain. Thanks again!
