[ Cassian Andor appears on the screen, sitting behind his desk in the Attleton Guardian’s office. Unlike most time spent in his office, there is no Swablu sitting on his head. ]

Since my campaign, I have voiced my desire to see Attleton’s neighborhood watch system of providing law enforcement more strictly formalized and regulated. I value the contributions of our concerned citizens, who are vital to upholding law and order in Attleton, and its long-standing traditions. These changes won't turn the Neighborhood Watch into a police force under a different name but strengthen it within the bounds of our town’s laws and customs.

Members of the Watch will carry badges, it will be limited to citizens who have no criminal record or given other concern of being unable to fulfill their duty impartially and conscientiously. The watch will be bound by a new set of regulations which determine both its conduct and the limits of its authority. In return, the Guardian's office will take an active role in training them.

Of direct interest to all citizens of Attleton is that the Guardian’s office will be providing self-defense courses for beginners. Sign-up lists can be found at the Guardian’s office and town hall, and if proprietors are willing, in stores all across town. We are still looking for volunteer teachers and other helpers.


OOC: Volunteers would be mostly teaching our NPC Attletonians, but player characters are welcome to take classes, too. Not really planning a log for this, but could put one up if there's interest.

"If you're lookin' for people to help teach, I've done a little bit of that before," Maggie offered. It wouldn't be the first time she'd taught people how to defend themselves, against walkers or against people. It made sense to help, and Maggie didn't want to be idle here.

Now that's a pleasant surprise, to hear from Maggie again so soon. "Thank you, I'd appreciate volunteer teachers and teachers with previous experience would be all the better. Have you settled in alright?"

Maggie smiled, and though he couldn't see it, it was more sure and confident than she'd felt in a while. "I've got a job, place to stay. Can't complain. And my husband is here." She had to celebrate that just a little, say something. She added, quickly, to bring her remarks back to the topic, "He might be able to help out, too."

"That's great luck, having your partner here. And he arrived so quickly, too." A blessing indeed, when some people wait for years and are never reunited with their loved ones. "It's far easier to settle into a new life here together. I'd appreciate his help with the courses, for sure. You could even teach a course together, if you'd like, I'll leave that up to you. What's his name?"

Ah, self defense training sounds like a lovely idea.

[Even though she's sure everyone in Everglade has, at least, a few weapons at home, self-defense training would be welcomed.]

Yet it seems like we have similar goals in mind for our cities.

I'm not sure if you're intending that as a compliment, but I'll take it as one.

It's a reality that law enforcement can't be everywhere at once, and I've always believed that people should take responsibility for their own lives. Providing self-defense training seems a gentler way to nudge them in the right direction than to just tell them they need to be responsible.

That really should be what every city should offer. Something like that would be useful for residents who aren't of the supernatural variety.

[She hums thoughtfully, adjusting how she holds the device a bit.]

Perhaps a class could be provided at The Red House, especially for those most vulnerable. It could help decrease reports of assault amongst them.

Yes, I can see that the Red House residents would be a good place to start in Everglade. You would also be specifically starting by giving the weakest a chance to defend themselves, not those who are already strong enough.

Although I suppose some basic disarming techniques couldn't hurt for the supernatural citizens either. I'm thinking of ways to teach them to protect themselves without falling back on their dangerous instincts.

Very true. Casualty rates from excessive force would drop as well.

[A sort of lightbulb goes off as she rubs her chin in a way that would question what she's up to.]

I just had an idea. Why don't we join forces, and see if we could find someone to teach residents basic first aid as well?

[ After a moment of looking stunned, he gives a tentative nod. ]

It hadn't occurred to me we should teach that as well, but yes... It would be another way to make life safer in our cities. And it would be close enough to security that I can justify the Guardian's office organizing it on the Attleton side.

Maybe we could even have people from Attleton teach in Everglade, and from Everglade in Attleton. It can't hurt to build ties between our towns, different as they are.

I'm not going to... [ He sighs. Yes. He is going to do it. Of course he will follow through with his promise. ] I'm going to think about a pose, yes. But I'm not going to be happy about it.

Ooh, badges, brilliant, haven't been a deputy before, well, sort of have, actually I was the sheriff, but just for a few days until I talked the cyborg assassin from outer space into taking over, he might still be there, come to think of it...

Watching does sound good, though, I'm good at watching, I've watched all sorts of things in my time, including a neighborhood or two.

[Of course, his "watching" usually lasts until he finds some trouble and then he's in it up to his eyeballs, but...]

I'm sure the Neighborhood Watch would welcome your enthusiasm. As far as I know they haven't ever had any pendant wearers. [ That should be interesting enough to watch for Cassian, though Attleton folks are a friendly lot on the whole. ]

They are invaluable for the safety of our town. Attleton's never relied on a proper police force or guardsmen like the other towns do, it's all volunteers taking care of their own.

[Which is to say, exactly what he'd want to do without anyone's approval, anyway. Volunteering to help and generally avoiding the police? That's basically his MO in a nutshell.

[ While pleasant enough, it comes out stiffly; he's still not used to such pleasantries.]

You seem well settled, but if there's anything you need, the Guardian's office will be happy to help.

I don't mind givin' a few shooting and gun handling classes if you need me to. I know they aren't always like a blaster and some are probably closer to those slugthrowers Luke talks about, but I can adapt. They aren't all that different, I imagine.

That would be helpful, thank you. I think the Neighborhood Watch could do with these classes. And I don't think the aiming or safety part should be too different. I had one of these projectile weapons before I could get my hands on a blaster, I can give it to you to practice.
