[Maka understands perfectly what she just read. She made sure to read it over and over again at varying speeds to take it all in, like a good student would.

It's just difficult for her to accept. The strange and mystical feeling of the world doesn't sit well with her, can she be certain she didn't just drop into the Witch world inexplicably? Well...maybe the Witches wouldn't be unkind to her, now that they've made peace anyway. But she doesn't feel comfortable without Soul around.

So when the video turns on, there's a teenage girl seeming totally marveled by the level of technology just the communicator shows. ...Then she realizes it's turned on and clears her throat.]

Hello. Maka Albarn, Demon Scythe Meister here...where is Death City? Or Ki--I mean Lord Death?

[That's still so weird for her, Kid's the new Lord Death? Wild.]

...And what's a--?

[Love potion, the word she was going for was love potion, but a shout interrupts her and another person appears on the screen. This time it's a boy with golden eyes and curious white stripes encircling his black hair. He might have been running but doesn't seem out of breath as he checks over Maka with a fussing worry that only someone really obsessive would have.]

Maka, are you all right? Have you seen Soul anywhere? I can't find Liz and Patti myself--oh, your pigtails are crooked!

[The boy immediately gets to work with untying and fixing the girl's pigtails while she stares at him. Finally she sighs, leaving Kid to his grooming (he's only doing it because he's worried and needs something to work on), and shifts her gaze to the camera.]

If anybody from the Academy could report in, we'd appreciate it.

[If anybody comes across them anywhere, Maka will still be sitting patiently, waiting for Kid to finish the fixing. Kid on the meanwhile will be piling questions on her about who what where and why.]

[Ohhhh, now suddenly the personal space thing is a problem.]

[The phrase tumbles out before he has a moment to think about it, and he immediately realizes that he sounds chastising. Of course he meant it that way, but that didn't make it appropriate.]

I will be right there.

[Spirit looks like he might be turning off the video feed, when in fact he is only adjusting the volume and then shoving said device into his pocket. It isn't long before he emerges from the cave into the city, looking around nervously. There were too many things on his mind, but his primary focus needed to be to get to Maka and Kid.]

[Finally, Kid's done with his preening, so Maka can stand up and stretch, absently looking at her communicator as she does.

What are the odds of herself, Kid, and her father coming in at the same time? Where's Soul? She supposes in a pinch she can use Papa, it didn't turn out so badly, but...

Something pings at her senses and she looks up, not bothering to inform Kid of what she sensed. She'd recognize that gross and perverted wavelength anywhere...

Spirit doesn't have to look too far, Maka will meet him halfway. She stands, staring contemplatively at her father, silently hoping that the key she has is not a shared apartment with him.]

Papa...I think we're stuck here.

[To his credit, his attention remains on the situation at hand. Spirit makes a move to hug her, wanting to feel and know she was safe--a compulsion worsened by the fight with Asura and the knowledge of nearly losing her.

The pensive glare he is recieing stops him cold.]

Maybe not. There hasn't been a chance to look yet.

I know the pamphlet said what's going on, but the whole thing makes no sense

[She'll...humor him and accept the hug. She still feels so small compared to him, but it's not as though there's nothing bigger than her father, that tide of black blood that she thought would drown him...

Never mind, don't think about that.]

...Papa, have you ever heard of a love potion?

[Maka is this really a good time to ask that.]

Well, I've seen people use alcohol to get someone to--

[Wait. What? No! No, no, no.]

No. I haven't. And what does that have to do with anything?!?

...I hope you stabbed the people that did that.

[Yes. Yes yes yes.]

Whoever wrote the letter said he "doesn't do love potions" and I wanted to know what they were, but then Kid interrupted me before I could ask and started...grooming. [Sigh.]

I don't make a habit of stabbing people not on Lord Death's list. You might recall I was the unstabby portion of the team when I worked with Stein. Ironically.

[Shush this is totally relevant.

He sighs wearily.]

Anyway, that's the least of our concerns I think.

Oh--that's right, I left Kid to meet with you. [She can't help it, all right, it's her dad. But very insensitive considering Kid just lost his father and doesn't have that luxury. Maka won't dwell on that, though, just tug on Spirit's sleeve to lead him back where she came from.]

It's still weird for me to think of him as Lord Death, and he can take care of himself, but we still don't know what kind of place this is.

[This may or may not have everything to do with why Kid is keeping his distance, hands tucked into his pockets, strolling along distantly in their wake. It's a distance where a human might not eavesdrop, and a reaper can think without getting wrapped up in someone else's conversation.

They may continue uninterrupted, but Kid is following them. Until they turn around and start walking his way, at least.]

Shall we discuss what we've learned thus far?

[Some greeting, Kid, just get right down to business why don't you?! All things considered, their often neurotic young god is taking all of this quite well!]

[Spirit shrugged in an action of not-quite-agreement, unwilling to commit to the fact that he did not agree with her. For one thing, he was the adult. For another, he was also the only weapon they knew present. There was responsibility there, anyway, and he meant to uphold that to the best of his ability.

Spirit startled when Kid addressed them. How had he not noticed he was there?]

Sir.

Unless you've seen more than I have, I don't know much of anything yet.

[Maka casts an unsure glance between her father and Kid...did he really just call him "sir"? Sir was something she called adults, not people her own (or appear to be her own) age. But then again...]

We just got here, too, Papa. You're the only other one from the Academy we've seen so far, I haven't sensed Soul or anybody else around.

[Sir sees Kid's eyes averted a moment, though perhaps in respectful acknowledgment; either way, the reaper remains silent until Maka's had a say, nodding in mute agreement.]

...

[He lifts his head, eyes lidded for the moment.]

I'm afraid all we have at our disposal are the letters and those willing to answer our questions.

Unfortunately, it seems most of them are as informed as we are.

[I saw that her expression says immediately. It seems Kid is about as unsure as she is...though...]

[Never mind.]

Yeah...it seems like all we can do right now is just stay together.
