Genessia Carnival

The week of the carnival has arrived! With the combined effort of paid workers, volunteers, Azura, and those Azura decided were going to help her (Looking at you Fam), the setup has gone without a hitch. Those who come by the large park in Genessia City during the morning and afternoon of the 16th will see the carnival in various stages of completion. It isn't the sun starts to set and the sky begins to burn the colors of pink and orange with a topping of blue that the lights on the carnival tents and other structures come to life.

THE CARNIVAL IS ON.

It's clear that the carnival takes up almost all of the park; it's setup done so that the rides, attractions, booths and other assorted portions of the carnival are setup around ponds and lakes and take advantage of paths in the park. At the entrance are a myriad of food stalls, while the bigger rides are further in the back. In between are smaller attractions like games, but more importantly this is where all of the booths for the residents are set up. Several rows deep, the offerings here are wildly different and each engaging in its own way. Lastly, the larger attractions of the Carnival are organized in the large central portion of the carnival where a large area has been cleared and sectioned off in 4 large rectangles to house each with plenty of room.

Carnival Fare

Food And Drink - There are so many smells that sometimes your nose might be confused. From the scent of roasting meat, to the smell of sugary sweet cotton candy, the myriad of scents mingle throughout the whole carnival. There's an entire section of picnic tables for carnival goers to take a load off and eat their fill. The admission ticket even paid for complimentary drinks! However, there are plenty of stalls that are offering much more interesting options, including alcohol (for adults only!). Food ranges in price of course, and unfortunately there are a few stalls that might be overpricing their food...
Rides and Attractions - The carnival isn't complete without classic carnival rides. There's a ferris wheel, teacups, several different merry-go-rounds, as well as a SUPER ROMANTIC Tunnel of Love. For the more adventurous there's even a few smaller sized roller coasters as well as an interesting looking magically powered water slide that's powered by a couple of local wizards and a "Doctor". One of the most popular rides seems to be the bumper cars, where each car has the chance to change shape on impact. Lastly for those who are brave enough there's a 2 story haunted house of mirrors full of jump scares and atmospheric music.
Games and Stalls - THIS is where all of those stalls that were signed up for are. Of course, they make up the bulk of stalls, though the ones that are food oriented border the area mentioned earlier. Other booths such as shooting ranges, pingpong ball toss, fortune tellers, toy building booths and even a couple of booths where you can fish up your own little fish pet are here. Careful though, some of these booths are lowkey ripoffs, since they were largely built by volunteers. Should you get scammed it's wise to try and find security rather than handle it yourselves.

Main Attractions

Randomized Plays - These plays are held nightly, but they're not your traditional plays. Participants are chosen from the audience who paid admission! On top of that, the roles are randomly assigned. You never really know what you're going to get, so in the end the plays come out a lot like improv. They're also largely hilarious, unintentionally or otherwise as often the two plays wind up intermingled! Once, Rumtumtugger wound up playing the part of Belle, while Gaston had to do a solo song all on his own... In the end, it'll be up to you what role your character plays, but it's never quite what's expected. Behind the scenes must be a riot no matter what!
Obstacle Course - One attraction at the center of the carnival seems to weave around the other three, and out into the grounds itself. It's a complicated series of obstacles, from a pit of inky, oily water, to slippery bridges and swinging portions that need to be dodged. Portions of the course are even quite vertical, offering a strenuous climb as part of the challenge. This course is not for the faint of heart, and many will find themselves having to give up halfway through, or even being disqualified by being knocked out of the course. Those who choose to work together might make it farther but in the end only one can win. Be prepared for betrayal if you take that route...
Eating Competition - There's not just one eating competition during the week of the carnival. Instead, several are held throughout the week. Hotdogs are first, followed by pancakes, then burgers. After that, towards the final three days of the carnival the bigger competitions start.
- Hotdogs - how many can you eat in 5 minutes?
- Pancakes - how many can you eat in 5 minutes?
- Burgers - how many can you eat in 8 minutes?
- Whole Chickens - You have 3, can you eat them all in 12 minutes?
- Whole Turkey - You have an entire turkey, how much can you eat in 10 minutes?
- 6 Tier Chocolate Cake - Finish the whole cake to win. (Hour Time Limit)
Those who have supernatural abilities are given an extra challenge to make things fair. For those who eat themselves sick there is a medical tent nearby, and of course plenty of room for a crowd of spectators.
Jousting Competition - The colorful, campy and overall cheesy look of this jousting competition almost looks like a childish version of the competition. However, the prizes are real. Instead of the prize for the winning "knight" the winner of each match will be able to earn a fair sum of redbills! It's enough to cover the entry fee paid for the competition and then a couple hundred on top of that. Each participant chooses their weapon, but they all have different strange additional abilities depending on their color...
- Yellow - sparkles on impact
- Red - screams upon impact
- Green - slimes whatever it hits
- Blue - freezes what it touches for 3 seconds
For this competition special abilities beyond that of a normal human are dampened by special units hidden in the ring. Disabling them would of course, wind up in the participant being disqualified.

*A date somewhere? Faye wishes. She takes a small sip from her tall glass of cider, smiling over the top of her drink at him*

The seat will be taken when you come sit with me.

*Then she motions to the empty seat and puts her glass down with an amused smile*

[Uai briefly feels some resentment for the empty seat. The fact that Faye is here alone, without a date or even a friend to occupy that seat, really bothers him. He could just be reading into it too much, but no one should come to a carnival and drink alone.

So he'll gladly take that seat. Heck. He'll even order alcohol for once, so Faye isn't drinking alone anymore. At least until someone better comes to shove him aside.]

Any recommendations? Never seen so many drinks in my life, to be honest. I don't get out enough. [his fault. he's a jerk.]

*That's just the way it is for Faye. She is used to taking herself drinking alone. In fact, Faye is so used to it that she doesn't even consider how sad that must seem to anyone else. At this point, she's had a few drinks, which takes the nasty edge off her, so he even gets a small smile as he sits down*

Apparently not. But even if you were out a lot, this is a crap load of alcohol. What kinda drink are you after? I had a couple of good cocktails, and this cider is nice.

*She slides her glass over to him so he can take a sip if he wants to*

[He does take the cider and inspects it, then nods with approval.] It's good. You have good taste.

[where are your friends??

He looks back at the selection, then laughs dryly at his own stupidity.]

It's embarrassing, but even though I know how to timetravel and cross dimensions... I know nothing about alcohol. We don't have that in space. No one gets drunk. [and they're all tea snobs where Uai is from.]

*Faye grins at him widely and nods as she takes another drink from the glass*

Fruity but with enough of a kick - just how I like it.

*Spoilers - Faye doesn't really have any friends. Definitely not the type who would ask her to go along to any events like this*

You kidding me? What's the point in all that travel if you aren't gonna check out the local bars? That's the first thing I do on a new planet - you can tell a lot about the people who live there based on their alcohol...

[Uai puts in an order for the same cider, since he trusts it now. And he does like fruity flavors. They remind him of enough of his tea obsessed family, without actually kicking his heart in the gut.]

Right? The food and drinks a culture prefer speak a lot for their resources and scientific advancement. Beer especially shows a lot about how far science has come-- [whoops, nerd at 12 o'clock.

He clears his throat, embarrassed by that nerdy moment.] So you travel between planets, huh? That must be fun. I've always wanted to explore an entire solar system, or two.

Exactly. Whether the stuff is cheap, or entirely imported, or if there's decent industry...

*She agrees with him at least, giving him a wider smile as he clears his throat - that's kind of cute*

It's great. The freedom to go wherever the hell you want whenever the hell you want. I miss it. This place just feels...small.

*Faye shrugs, but lifts her glass when Uai gets his drink and holds it towards him for a toast, though she doesn't exactly know what for*

[She's turned out to be interesting. Uai would never think this was a waste of time, keeping someone company, but it's proving to be a positive rather than a neutral.]

It really is, huh? Even with the other cities. The fact there's a boundary bothers me. It's like living somewhere that the world really is flat. [He grumbles slightly at the comparison, like it's the worst thing he could think of.]

You would think a place filled with folks from other worlds would be more exciting.

Right? It really isn't the same. I've got my motorbike, sure, but it's really not the same thing as getting away in my ship whenever I want.

*Faye sighs a bit and drinks up more of her cider. She slows down, though, because she doesn't want to keep drinking beyond how fast he is*

You're not happy here? Or...just not exciting enough for you?

*Because he's right - this place really is often not very exciting at all*

As much as I like to travel, I'd rather be home with my family.

[Uai is always ~~shameless~~ happy to talk about his kids and not-wife. He looks down at his drink, briefly disappointed that Hana and him never got to drinking together. She would probably have spat her first sip of beer right in his face or something.

Somehow he misses her.]

But I was lost before Genessia too. I guess this isn't much different from before.

Right...

*That's about as empathetic as she can be with that. She raises her glass and glances around her as she takes another drink*

This place must be pretty shitty if you have famoly.

*Cause she doesn't have any to speak of. But she does understand feeling lost, so she looks back at him*

I guess not, hmm? There are a lot of people here who are just going day to day, waiting to go home..

Right? Unless your family arrives here. Or, I guess, you could always lay fresh roots in Genessia?

[He says that in a half joking manner. Uai still can't imagine settling down in Genessia. Heck, he has no idea how he's going to settle down with Hana when/if he gets home. "Uai" isn't the "Shi" that Hana loved anymore.]

What about you? Are you waiting to go home, or starting fresh?

Some people are lucky. Some people round here have all sorts of friends and loved ones who have appeared from their home worlds.

*Faye shakes her head slowly at his question, shrugging as though her answers are something she has long since come to terms with*

I've left nothing behind. Starting fresh, I guess, though I haven't got very far on that score.

[That's sad to hear, but does bring his thoughts back to this empty chair. Does she mean not setting roots, because that's normally hard anyway... or is she actually lonely here?]

I'm sure it's just taking time, right? Relationships take a while to bloom, or something. [He does mean platonically too.]

*Faye just gives him a look - that is sure something to say. And maybe if he knew better about who she was he'd realise that his saying just doesn't work for her*

Nothing blooms from nothing. You gotta have a seed, something to grow from, right? If I was a garden, the gardener would have up and left by now...

*Thing is, she doesn't even really sound sad because it's just become natural for her to have very few platonic relationships, and certainly nothing that looks like love*

Maybe you just need to hire a new gardener.

[... and he's on the case!

Seriously. Uai can't stand to hear someone sound so lonely. At least his own sadness is sort of unstoppable now, and his fault. He doesn't like people being lonely through bad luck.]

Gotta have someone...?

Right.

*Faye tilts her head at him. Depends what he means by someone... She looks at him for a moment, biting her lip as she thinks*

I have a roommate. I have a friend who recently arrived from home. I have a couple of people I could talk to if I bumped into them. But I don't have a someone someone.

[That is all very hard to believe. Uai is reminded that he's incredibly lucky to find all forms of love in every world he visits. He's been lonely, but never like this.]

Well... Now you have me. My name is Uai. [He offers his hand--- Then retracts the offer, remembering that his touch his physically painful. Yay for cursed existences.] Nice to meet you.

*She had been about to give him her hand, but since he decided not to shake her hand for some reason, she wasn't going to push it. Instead, she just nods*

Faye's a good name. [Don't say that about his, cuz it's not.]

Drinking and then... I dunno. Maybe I'll walk past some of the other stuff and see if any of it's worthwhile.

*So far, though, what she has seen suggests the kind of things that people do with a partner, a crush even, or with their friends. Being at attractions on her own is a bit too sad, even for her*

I'm helping Azura keep the carnival running smoothly. She organized this whole thing for everyone. [Uai sounds quite proud, and fond, of Azura. He still hasn't gotten over how amazing she-- the carnival, is.

He punishes these derailed thoughts by chugging the cider. It solves nothing.

Then smiles at Faye, as if nothing is wrong. He's fine. This is fine.]

Though, I might check out some of the attractions! It's more fun with a friend, right?

Azura, hmm?

*Faye hears the tone in his voice - very unlike the way anyone ever spoke about her. It's sweet, cause he seems like a nice guy. She smiles in return, finishing her own cider, and asking as innocently as possible*

Shouldn't you be with her? Helping her relax? Make a little trip in the tunnel of love?

[And now he's choking on cider.

There are worse ways to die, honestly.]

N-No noo-- I mean! Maybe later? Relaxing--- Being with her. I have a girlfriend and two daughters! [Uai is turning so red with shame and embarrassment.

But Faye saw through him once. Uai is hoping he can get Faye to open up and cue him in on how he can help cure her apparent loneliness. It's probably fair that he starts by opening up about himself. He does live by a strange 'equal exchange' policy when it comes to secrets.]

Sorry. I haven't seen my sweetheart in forever... Azura reminds me of her. So doting on her helps. [He has to avert his gaze when he talks about Hana. It hurts, and he doesn't actually want Faye to worry.] I never thought being in love could be this lonely.

Ah, but that's got nothing to do with me asking you to hang out.

You do?

*Ignore any choking - this guy has kids? Faye just stares at him for a moment - maybe that's awkward for him, but she doesn't seem to mind*

Huh...

*As he speaks of these women, Faye just looks at the empty glass in her hand as she listens*

Feelings make people feel lonely. That's why it's easier to have no attachments...

*And her latest rejection makes that feel very true...*
