It wouldn't have been the first time someone was sent back, and then returned with no memories of having been here before. That was why he didn't say anything to Lucy and Natsu before, choosing instead to just listen.

[It's hard to believe, as she can't recall anything about Genessia. Still, it seems odd that this person—whose voice she can't recognize—knows her.

She shakes her head.] I'm sorry, I don't remember ever being here. ...Maybe I look like someone you know? [She does have a doppelgänger in Edolas (albeit an older one), so it's always possible this person met a lookalike.]

This world is odd. People come and go from here all of the time, sometimes with their memories intact, sometimes without. It happened to Natsu, Lucy, Erza, and Mavis, before you. { Also Gray, but he left a second time. He still hasn't returned to Zeref's knowledge. } You should focus on finding them.
