Weapons experts.
Kind of without a weapon right now and not even sure if I should get it out of the stupid rock.
[His poor family heirloom. Even if it's probably safer in there than in his hands.]
I'm looking to build my own. It's a tradition where I'm from. I'm also wondering what made you choose yours? If it works for you, there must be a reason.
[Maybe not one of the more hopeful reasons he would have believed in the past. He's done with that. But one that makes sense.]

I had a professor who used a coffee thermos to fight. There has to be a way to accomplish it. The only thing is that means it would probably have to be loaded prior to attacking, instead of having ammo already in.

I never was big on guns personally, so I'm not an expert, but I believe there are some that can snap together or apart so you could carry it quietly and hide when not in use.
For adding ammo quickly, there are many means, Dadi was fond of all of them, since then there was no telling what we would fight at any given occasion. He used bandoliers: think of belts with slots to hold each bullet, and that's why I do so with cigars now. [Also because Smoker's a freak. Mostly the freak thing.] I'm not sure what loads the quickest, I recommend finding a gun expert and trying out different types in advance to see what works best for you: size, style, and reloading included. Cannons obviously are the biggest, and slowest to reload. But derringers are not easy to reload either, which was Dadi carried so many, he would only reload them after battles were through. I wonder if he has switched to a heavier gun now that he's bounty hunting, however. Since damage isn't as necessary as intimidation, but it's weird to think of him changing styles at all.

[It's something for him to look into, eventually. Probably not for a while. He still has a lot to sort through, and he's not sure if this is what Alice meant by finding the right ingredients. But it's something to think about.]

Doesn't a cannon take longer to aim? Unless you have super strength.
What about a cannon made of derringers.
There are a lot of options. I'll look into it more.

Cannons are not precise, and generally shouldn't be used if you need to aim them. They're meant for extremely heavy damage, like city walls, ships, or mountainsides. I can't think of any practical reason you would need a cannon here. And you need to load guns, and even cannons, with smaller balls. Like firework tubes. Balls & bullets use torque to aim properly, which would not work without centripetal force -- roundness.
And yes, gun fanatics are as loony as sword fanatics, so there are guns for just about any occasion imaginable.
If you want to get extremely fancy, you could make a 4-tier gun with multiple bullet chambers, one for each element. You'd need to find a way to keep it from overheating in the ignition chamber, but it would be... the closest you could get to a cannon of derringers. I think. [SINCE THAT WAS A LITTLE BIZARRE TO IMAGINE EVEN FOR SMOKER.]

And the 4-tier gun could either form into one, or be taken apart like those others guns you mentioned. So you could dual-wield if you needed to.

The rest might be possible, however. I'm not sure Fawn's forge could help you with it, but are you relatively familiar enough to making weapons? If you want a 4-strap gun, the bigger concern I have is that if you can take them apart to work individually, you'd probably have to pull the trigger on all four individually, even if you can aim it together as "one."

I know how to make a sword. In theory. [Thank Weiss. Her intense study sessions she had put him through for months had paid off.] But I haven't actually built one before and I don't have any experience with other weapons. True. I'm not sure how to get around that.

So you don't have time to learn anything, practice immensely, and you have little to no idea what you're doing with forging.
Are you sure you don't want to get the sword out of the rock?

You might be able to design a gun the way I suggested, but try to resist the urge to get too creative. Functionality matters more, and don't forget, you wanted it to be light. The lighter it is, the less durable, etc.
Another option might be a type of crossbow. It's not as good defensively as a gun, but if you're using special elements for ammo, that might not matter as much. They're also lightweight and easier to make, and very slightly more versatile. They also have the added element of surprise if just because people often forget how lethal they can be.
Depending on how you used your sword before, you could also consider an axe or a halberd, but to really use either effectively, it takes practice.

Defense isn't something I'm worried about. [And if he changed his mind he could always figure out a way to make it defensive later.
He's not sure how anyone could forget a lethal weapon is lethal, but that could be helpful at some point too.]
Again, I figured that out. [It was not practicing that helped get him into this mess. At least, that's how he remembers it.] I tried to use my sword one-handed most of the time, but does a halberd require less balance?

Yeah, halberds require less balance, but more core strength. They have a much longer range, need a little less finesse, and you should be able to learn at least the basics very quickly. They're also more convenient for fighting multiple enemies or gangs than a sword or guns.
