OPEN LOG; EVERGLADE, GENESSIA - do not reply until you read the ooc post

The first sign that something was going on that day hadn't been at the crack. It hadn't even been in Genessia, as a matter of fact. The first sign had been a sound not unlike a window shuddering in a heavy storm. It perforated the atmosphere within Everglade first.

Only a few moments later, Fayren would hear the same shudder echo through its forests, forcing birds to flee the cover of the trees. In the populated areas of the kingdom itself, it would be much quieter, as if it were miles away.

Then it would return to Genessia. The crack in the sky was rapidly saturated, thousands more than before forcing their whole shapeless bodies against the barrier. Some of the strange aurora-tinted color seems to press into their ranks, a few of the strange creatures being forced back, but quickly being replaced by another of its kind.

And a sickening crack could be heard in all archways near and far, but it was loudest in Everglade, where a new crack had formed. Two humongous cracks appeared in Everglade's barrier like a sinister grin as if it were laughing at the town just above the clocktower. The two cracks took only a couple of seconds more before the strange monstrous creatures burst small holes into that crack, not big enough to fit their bodies through at once.

The leaked through, dripping like poison from an apple out of that sneering mouth in the sky until the first of these creatures fell to the ground. The eager, hungry soul from before, whose abyss of a stomach had been shared with the whole of Genessia when he'd opened his misshapen jaw the first time a few days ago now looked from side to side in the streets of Everglade.

The first face he saw was that of an NPC, and he only saw it for a moment before launching himself at the man and pinning him to the ground. Some would recognize him as the grizzled owner of The Rabbit's Foot. A loud scream was put out from the man as the creature opened its jaw wide, but did not eat him. Nothing seemed to happen when his jaw was opened, as a matter of fact.

The creature closed its mouth slowly before standing upright on what seemed to be a two-legged form, though if it had arms they didn't take shape. It made a gesture as if it were cracking its neck as the man escaped quickly, locking the door to his shop behind him.

More of the creatures were piling into Everglade slowly but surely, but this one in particular caught sight of a local werewolf, someone with a pendant, a soul, and repeated his mauling, but this time- this time something happened. This time a strange, glowing mist seemed to pull out of the Everglade resident's body, a faint glimmer of aurora with it, and in a short time this person stopped screaming. They were still alive, but it didn't seem like there was anything... inside, really.

A hissing, victorious laughter left the creature and he moved on, heading toward Genessia's gate along with his oversized mouth pulled up into an eerie grin that reflected the crack in the sky. Those that had made it in through Everglade's crack followed suit.

They had to let the rest of their friends in through Genessia; it was only the polite thing to do.

Levy was just staring at him as they moved back towards the crowd. She wanted to apologize again but she realized there was no logic in that so she remained silent and calm until they had things under control. She was glad to see that her barrier stayed up even when they had moved away from the group. It would be permanent until she realized it or another mage undid it.

She continued to listen, waiting for a break in breath to respond. “That was very cleaver of you. I’m glad that we were able to stop that thing.” She paused glancing around at the people and then back to Ted. “Why wasn’t it after everyone else?”

Levy paused again and then flushed realizing that she hadn’t properly introduced herself. “Oh! I’m sorry. I’m Levy Mcgraden; it is nice to meet you.” This wasn’t the strangest way that she had met someone but it certainly ranked high.

Ted had an interesting way to talk. He talked a lot which Levy found both entertaining and informative. After introducing herself she smiled up at him. She really hadn’t meant those things she sad about him considering she didn’t know if very well at all.

"Hmm. Perhaps because I'm very, very fortunate? Honestly, I don't know why the beasts are content to leave them alone. But don't look a gift horse in the mouth." He looked on, a bit weary, at his procession as they grumbled about. They were shaken, and stirred, but not well done. Not yet, anyway.

"You think I'm clever?" He said in the same incredulous tone as before. He was tasked with cleverness some time ago, so being praised for it now did the trick in lifting his spirits. Ted had a habit of savoring names, even if he did switch out the ones he couldn't work with for ones more to his liking. " 'Levy', interesting. Perhaps that comes from 'Levi", in my world, meaning 'attached'. Eventually became a tribe of priests. Well, I can speculate on your attachments or your relation to the clergy later."

His line had now lined up, indicating they were as ready as they'd ever be to make the last stretch. "I may as well put myself further in your debt, while I've got you. Are you free for the rest of the evening? I could use your help. In addition to escaping the auspices of spirits, these people can't travel between cities without the assistance of one wearing a necklace." Ted held the chain of his. "Taking them through one at a time can be sluggish work. We'd all love to cut that time in half. Of course, I won't keep you if you have prior engagements."

Levy continued to listen to Ted and the more he spoke the wider her smile got. Even in such a dire situation she can't help but enjoy talking to the man. It's true that he's not like anyone she has known or met before now. Her head tilted slightly to the side as he indicated the group.

She didn't have any comments about her name. She joined the guild when she was eleven and since then it's been her family. She doesn't know the origin of her name besides what she reads about in books.

"I'd be happy to come and help." Her smile widened. "I was trying to help people anyway." If it meant that they'd be safe then she would be happy to and maybe she could even find a way to boost their moral. Though making flowers appear out of thin air might not do the trick for their current situation.

Ted's smile did some widening of its own. "Excellent! And rather fortunate for you, too. I had a guilt trip all ready to go, but now that your free will is on board, I can save it for a rainy day. We're headed towards—oh, hang on..." He knew it was rude to check your phone while in the middle of a conversation, but this one seemed important. Ted's eyes scanned quickly before pocketing the device.

"More good news! Apparently a fellow Guardian-to-be is offering asylum, and I have just the gaggle of inmates for her. I don't normally like to test one's hospitality, but circumstances being what they are..."

As they walked and talked, Ted's opportunism asserted itself.

"Ah! Speaking of attachments and 'cleric'al work, what do you do for a living, aside from the prevention of others dying? Which you're rather handy at, by the way. If you don't mind more of that, I might have something to capture your interest."

Assuming she didn't turn him down, Ted went on. "It's a funny story, really. You know how all the Guardians may hire deputies? I'm in the middle of looking for some myself. Don't worry, this wasn't an elaborate ploy meant for headhunting. Anyway, I've had chance to inspect the office, and I refuse to utilize more than two thirds of it, for the rest is stuffed with mystical doodads I've just enough sense not to tangle with.

You see, I'm not much for magic, as proved in our mortal game of hot 'pot'ato. To my chagrin, Everglade has had to deal with a glut of the stuff. You seem to know your way around a wand or two, and...well, you probably know where I'm going with this."

Levy laughed at that. "It's good to see you are honest about it." She didn't know how she would have felt if he was looking to guilt her into helping but she could understand the desperation she saw in the peoples gazes as they began to continue to safety. Her eyes glanced at Ted's device as he reverenced the Guardian. Levy didn't know the girl but it's good to see so many leaping to lend a hand.

"If she's offering then it really isn't testing." At least that's what Levy thought.

She would occasionally scan the streets as they walked but Levy's focus was mostly on Ted as he spoke. It took a far amount of her attention to keep up with him. "I'm a fairy tail wizard. Though here that doesn't mean as much. I used to take on contracted jobs of all sorts to make money. I only just arrived here. I was thinking of opening a book shop or helping out in the Library to earn enough to pay for my room."

Levy paused.

"What sort of magical items?" She was interested and research and magic were two things the young wizard could work well with. Though she'd like to point out that her light pen wasn't a wand.

"Heaven knows. All sorts. The...I guess you could call him the Grandfather Guardian, the one before the one I'll replace, had something called the "Drunk Tank", a place where magic wouldn't tread. Then there's the basement, a place so suffused with the stuff it doesn't even have a name, where he kept the things vindicating the inebriated tank's existence.

In short, a mystical mishmash of mayhem I have no hope of sorting. I'd need some kind of sorceress secretary or something." Ted didn't think he'd be too subtle.

"Might as well say it plainly. I'd like you to consider being my deputy. I've already recruited one whose job is, more or less, despising and rooting out magic, but someone who was permitted its ways and knew them will probably prove necessary, if current events are any indication."

She rose an eyebrow curiously. "Rooting out magic?" That wasn't a no either but she wanted to know what she was getting into. She really wanted to help but she only just arrived and she didn't know what being a deputy really entailed.

After her question Levy smiled waving a hand from side to side. "I mean, I'd be happy to help and for a job but I suppose I want to understand everything fully first. I'm still learning about this world and I was hoping to see if I can find out more."

She paused.

"Having access to more magic from this world might help but a deputy usually implies that I would be enforcing something." She was a little unsure with how to Guardian's worked considering it seemed those living here had no say in the matter. If it was for the good of others than she supposed it was alright but she was still learning about everything and she couldn't say for sure.

"Darn!" He joked, snapping his fingers. "I was hoping you'd be reckless and jump right in. Well, if you did become a deputy, that kind of levelheadedness would be much-needed."

"Yes, I'm currently testing another deputy. Like many woman here, she's very dour, with a face just a tick more expressive than a bird's. She has a history of being an inquisitor, or someone who hunted down misbehaving. Don't worry; whatever the title might seem, she's a very level-headed sort. No worries about her being overcome by zeal.

So, I've set the scales, and on the left plate we have the skeptical, the one who knows of its harm. On the other, perhaps...ah, but you wanted to know what's in store.

Yes, you would have the duty of keeping the peace and enforcing the law, which doesn't differ much from any other civilized law keeper. With Everglade, there's the matter of mysticism which throws a wrench into things. Other than that, about what you'd expect.

Oh, and I've made enemies with Dracula, Lord of Vampires or something, so that would likely put you in his cross hairs.

All told, you take one part everyday policeman, and one part every strange thing Genessia has in store. You've proven yourself adept in the latter. Said latter, by the way, is why I don't have much more understanding than you. Every day is a surprise here, but I think we do well in facing surprises. If you could add your knowledge to mine, that understanding might increase. That said, it's dangerous work, and I'll consider myself very lucky to be standing by the end of it. Oh, here we are."

They'd arrived at the gate to Fayren, whereupon Ted took two of the villagers, one on each hand, and led them through. "Just like this."

“I see.” Levy weighed her options, she certainly needed a job but she didn’t want to have to be an enforcer. It wasn’t the sort of thing that fit her nature. She’d always go to the help of a friend and fight of enemies and people who attack but those were always cases of the strong taking advantage of the weak.

She wanted to protect people if she could.

“I don’t really mind enemies.” She smiled. “I’m honestly used to it being in Fairy Tail. If you can image we don’t get along with everyone and usually those in government seats are on that list. If it’s alright, can I think about it? I’d rather focus on this conflict now but it certainly seems like a good position. Assuming I can act according to my own terms.” Not that anything would stop her from being herself.

“And as for dangerous? Well, I’m used to that too.” She smiled taking a mother and child by the hand and guiding them through the gate as well.

Ted did wonder whether she was suited to it. Like many women, she was kind. Perhaps too kind to bear down on a lawbreaker. "Mm, it's hard to imagine you 'levy'ing a fine for littering, or writing someone a speeding ticket. But yes, by all means, give it all the thought it needs. It'd likely break some social rule to force a woman into your service twice in one day." Ted tried a yet more efficient method; 10 people on his hands, one for each finger, and another three or four holding onto his overcoat or pant legs. The villagers were uneasy about this new development, and rightly so, for it was the clumsiest mess of an escort he'd ever tried. They got through, eventually, but all agreed that two-at-a-time was the more dignified approach.

He also mused, out loud, the assumption. "Act on your own terms...I doubt it. As far as I know, most people who work in lofty areas like law, or justice, make themselves subservient to its claims and the citizenry. Those who do as they like are often bullies and tyrants, whom should never go near such an occupation. But who knows? Perhaps the law is after your own heart."

Her eyebrow rose at his pun. He could do better than that. She watched him trying to be creative and choose to do what might take longer but was safer. She smiled at those she held hands with and they seemed to be comforted by her confidence.

"I can be tough when I want to but I don't think that speeding tickets are hardly an issue to be worried about." That was when you had people randomly showing up and spirits pouring through cracks in the sky. What should be focused on? They should ban together, work towards finding out what this world is hiding.

Levy shook her head with a confident smile. It was a trait of all those in Fairy Tail. She couldn't just do something because she was told it was right. She had to believe it.

He worked with what he's been given, all right?

As an aside, out of earshot of the group, he said "Likely they'll develop taste enough for cars once this is through. Their feet must be frightfully sore." Ted was used to walking long ways, but much of Everglade is composed of homebodies who keep to themselves. Ted couldn't blame them.

"Far be it from me to try and persuade you against conscience. Pondering, on the other hand, I should like you to entertain very much. Such bitter irony; hesitation, careful mediation, the traits that would bring such needed balance are the ones which keep you from me. Ah well, it can't be helped." They'd made an end to their work twice as fast thanks to Levy's help.

"We've just a little ways to go before meeting Satori, our eminent host. From what I can gather, we're now out of harm's way as far as spirits are concerned. Thank you for all you've done. I don't foresee much more trouble on this end, if you'd like to go back and take part in glorious battle once again. Though I wouldn't think less of you if you preferred to continue our escort, now that we near its end. Perhaps you might help me think of a way to drop them off without actually meeting our host? She's a mind reader, I forgot to mention.."

Levy smiled. “I will think about it.” Her smile widened slightly. “And I don’t see you the type to set me against my conscience. There are more pro’s than con’s from what I’ve determined so far.” Escorting people was easy which gave Levy a lot of time to think about it. She wasn’t going to jump head first until after this chaos has settled, knowing that it would most likely affect her choice. “I should thank you though. It’s a wonderful offer, more so from someone I just met.”

She watched the group from the corner of her hazel gaze noting how tired they looked. “I don’t mind escorting the whole way there. If you want I can walk them inside.” She didn’t have anything to hide should someone read her mind and she was good at organizing her thoughts towards what was relevant, which meant there would be nothing useful there besides the situation at hand.

“I suppose it’s unsettling not knowing if someone is reading your thoughts.” She looked over at Ted curiously. “I wonder what it is you mean to hide.” Though she also wondered if this Satori would read someone’s thoughts without permission from the person, it sounded rude. Which means that Levy didn’t like it.

"Oh, the process describing how to turn iron to gold, the secret to immortality, the names of the shadowy cabal that actually rules the world, and the recipe for raspberry cream cookies. You know, the usual." He smiled, glad that she at least was considering it. Ted was feeling a bit wary, courting magicians so freely. The punishments for his kind getting into sorcery were pretty severe. Hopefully an exception could be made for those who worked beside him.

"Would you lead them in? That would be delightful. Not to gossip, but Satori really has no choice when it comes to eavesdropping on one's thoughts. Her sister can keep it in check, but I think she's tending to other matters at present." Don't think of it as him already pawning his workload on you, Levy, think of it as...an internship.

"Hah, if you accept, you may want to save your after it's all said and done. No telling what lies in store for the sheriff's office." He yawned; it was 1 a.m., about five hours since he'd started this journey. "I think I officially start tomorrow; some first day, eh?"

Levy was from a world were wizards and mage was accepted and common practice. Not everyone had the talent to be great but there was something inside everyone that could be tapped if they desired to do so. She couldn’t understand a world were using magic would get you punished, unless you used it for something wrong.

“That sounds like its rough.” There were some people she didn’t want to hear the thoughts of to be honest and for that to be a constant state of being must be exhausting. She’d at least try to keep her thoughts to a minimum then, if only to not give her host a headache. Levy was the sort that when she was thinking, her mind moved a mile a minute.

“You are already doing a great job.” Or at least Levy thought so. “I don’t mind leading them in. You should take a break before you burn yourself out.”

"Doesn't it? I can't imagine how one holds a conversation like that. There must be a lot of noise; perhaps she can tune in like a radio." He felt a little bashful at the compliment, given how unhappy the sprites were. Still, having someone else believe in his competency, even if it was a lie purely for kindness' sake, did him good.

"That's...very nice of you to say, thank you. That goes double for your offer to finish up, an offer I wouldn't refuse for the world. I'll meet you when you're done."

As Satori said, they had room, but no "board." The logistics would have to be worked out, leading to a protracted end that was looking endless. But, this was Fayren, a fifth of the city free from spirits, so it wasn't too hard to work around. It was too bad Ted wasn't a miracle-worker, else he could've broken one loaf of bread to feed five-thousand. Thankfully there weren't quite so many, and eventually temporary arrangements were arranged.

Ted was dead-tired when he saw the sun come up. "So this is what I'm in for." He yawned mightily. "Goodness." He didn't expect Levy to tag along so long, but he appreciated her help just the same. Whether in person, if she remained, or over the comms if she didn't, he offered his gratitude a final time, and bid her good night. Or morning, as the case was now.

[personal profile] skilledwithwords 2015-07-19 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Levy didn't consider it a lie. If she hadn't thought it true she wouldn't have given Ted the compliment. "Okay." She gave him a quick nod and then began to guide the people towards their final destination. She had inspected the way on a map so she knew roughly where she was going.

Dropping off the group hadn't taken her long though a few of the people looked distress when she began to leave. That could, however, be because of their current situation and there really wasn't a way for Levy to tell what that distress might be so she moved back towards Genessia.

When Levy moved towards the city and the sun she smiled pulling out her communicator to send Ted a quick message. "Everyone's back safe. You get somewhere where you can sleep?" Everyone needed rest and Levy was thinking of making her way back to the Inn in Everglade to do just that.

He couldn't help but laugh; the drunken sort born of fatigue. "Haha, yes I think I can manage that much. I can cook for myself too, if you're worried about my breakfast. Go on now, be selfish for eight hours and get some rest yourself."

[personal profile] skilledwithwords 2015-07-19 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Levy just smiled and shook her head. "No need to get like that." Though it didn't look like she was really upset about it.

"I'll go be selfish then." With a last smile she turned off the communicator and headed towards Everglade.
