GENESSIA PROM!
For any and all who agreed to help with the decorations, this would be the time to gather at the Hotel. A large list of assignments will be posted on the wall near the entrance, with duties including but not limited to:
1. Setting Tables, including placement of centerpieces
2. Wall and ceiling decorations, involving a lot of gossamer drapery and lights
3. Preparing the buffet table, with a mixture of hot and cold foods, as well as a separate table at the end for delectable deserts
4. Getting all necessary equipment on stage for the Live Band to perform. Sound Checks may occur throughout.
5. A side dressing room area set up exclusively for those who volunteered to take the time to get ready themselves, including special hair and makeup stations and a large rack to hang their dresses & shoes to change into later
II - HOTEL LOBBY (6:30pm onward)

Cozy and luxurious in its own right, those who arrive before Prom is scheduled to begin will be allowed to lounge in the Hotel Lobby for a spell. Meeting and greeting other early birds and partaking in a select few hors d'oeuvre made available while waiting for the doors to open
III. - PROM PHOTOS!

In the far corner of the lobby, a cute backdrop will be set up, ready for any and all couples/groups/brave souls going stag for the evening to take a memorable photograph! Selfies are welcome throughout, but for those desiring a more professional setup, Hikari Yagami will be on hand for the first and last hours of the night for "official" Prom Photos.
Smile, everyone!
IV - EATING/DRINKING

With a "bar" consisting of 90% nonalcoholic beverages--the remaining ten percent reserved for of age chaperones--and a buffet table spanning the length of the side wall, there will be no shortage of food options that night! Hot pasta dishes, cold sandwiches, fruits, vegetable platters, and a special end section devoted to some of the best sweets Genessia's bakeries have to offer!
Of course, what prom would be complete without the traditional Fruit Bowl Punch? Better get a sip in early, though...because some traditions never die, and it's not like those in charge can keep an eye on that bowl the entire night, can they?
V. - DANCE FLOOR

With a live band (Thank you, Professor!) ready to rock, you'll soon be dancing the night away, under ethereal decorations that will really make you feel like you're dancing among the stars!
In between sets, there will be a DJ spinning a mixture of slow dances, crowd favorites, and songs that'll really get the party rockin' (
VI. - CHAPERONES

Because somebody's got to make sure the kids behave.
Hopefully actual adults who can behave themselves.
VII. - MINGLING/MISC.
What other shenanigans could the teens and tweens of Genessia possible get up to? The night is young, and so are they~

and then there's something in akechi's words the reminds him of a second reason why. it's not the way he says it, as bright and nauseatingly smiley as ever, but the word choice that crinkles the space between ren's brows. there's a hopelessness to it that reminds him of things akechi has said before, thrown into doubt after his betrayal, but this sheds light streaks of curiosity over those admissions once more.
ren's gaze is steady and studying, but his smile contradicts with the ease of its turn. )
Maybe for the best. You'd probably be some high-end sushi fiend in her head.
( movement takes his attention, eyes flicking to the bowtie. does he like it feels like a loaded question somehow. the urge to be dismissive is strong but the fun of giving akechi a hard time is even stronger. )
I think whether I do or not is irrelevant when you have enough praise for the both of us.
( don't fish for compliments here. he's not giving you the satisfaction of letting you know just how cute your bowtie is or how nice your hair looks. ren stands, hands in pockets; doesn't walk quite side-by-side but he stays close enough that people will know they're acquainted. )
Have you been to something like this before?
no subject
he lets out a tiny laugh, covering his mouth with a closed fist to do so. ] Probably. [ probably not. ]
no compliments. there's a shrug and a small sigh, though the small bit of laughter carried over just a bit for it to make it clear the sigh is more amusement than anything else. ] On the contrary, your opinion would be the most important on the matter. [ because...? ] But if that means you're agreeing with everything I'm saying, that's fine too.
[ akechi is quick to stand and follow. even in such a formal environment, ren's hands are in his damn pockets. he doesn't actually take in the surroundings until he's asked a question, which causes him to look away from ren and glance around the room. ]
No. [ before settling back on ren, his eyes actually roll. ] I was never on the guest list, even if I had to walk through the extravagant cocktail party to get to where I needed to be. [ the people that were on the guest list deserved to take a wrong sip and choke on their champagne. he blocks further disdain from slipping in to his tone. ]
School festivals may have come the closest but I was usually a too busy to attend my own school's. Believe it or not, this may have been yet another ulterior motive behind going to your's a day early. I've never even been to a tiny party before coming here. [ he smiles, practiced. it never hits the eyes. ] American films put such an emphasis on Prom being a finale of sorts, as if it's the last party a youth is allowed to have before they're thrust into the adult world. I suppose I'll have to start at the end here. You've surely had a good run of them, yes?
no subject
( about a year ago, it certainly seemed to matter the most. akechi would spend hours at leblanc talking to him about nothing and everything, asking ren's opinions from his favorite color all the way to what he thought about flat earth conspiracies. but whatever akechi thought of his opinions or not, they were never as important as the one that spoke directly into his ear, ordering ren's voice silenced for good.
admission that this is akechi's first time at such an event surprises him. with all that fame and tv glory, ren thought for sure his schedule would have been littered with cancelled parties and galas, whatever it is that the rich and famous do. his expression shifts...not to something softer, per se, but more open. curious. at the mention of their school festival, he even chuckles.
whatever confusion or ill-regard he may feels towards goro akechi, that takoyaki incident is easily one of his favorite memories. )
Nah... ( he shakes his head, drawing one hand out to rub at his neck. ) I went to a fancy buffet once with the others, that's about as close to this as it got. I'm never on the guest list either. Even here. When everyone is invited, doesn't make your invitation all that special. But it's all right.
( he's never really felt the need nor the desire to be included in things like this, and he wonders what about him would make akechi think he's the Party VeteranTM. as long as he has his friends, ren could care less where he is. he's adaptable. but if akech is pleased to be here then...he supposes that's good for him.
oh, but he won't say that. instead, he lets his gaze flick to akechi from its corner, over the quirk of his mouth. )
I wonder if your lack of guest list appearances has anything to do with what a know-it-all you are?
no subject
he never said he wasn't going to fake his death, technically speaking. it's better than how hurtful it'd be otherwise. it makes ren more tolerable.
rich and famous never hit. he was better off than he had been before and could afford pleasant things but still beneath the average crowd of that buffet. famous enough to have a following but not enough to hang out with risette. ] Was the buffet part of those welcoming parties you threw for everyone? [ more parties than he has been to, for sure. ren has so many friends or at least makes them easily. he'd have to have been invited to a thousand birthday parties and gatherings. family dinners with the sakura's? it all counted to him. ]
It doesn't make it special, does it? Though being invited to go along with someone means your presence was specifically requested there, at least. [ he's looking at him pointedly then immediately looking off once he's sure it was noticed. a hand goes to his chest. ]
No, that couldn't possibly be it. [ he raises a finger, reciting. ] An investment in knowledge pays the best interest, Amamiya-kun.
no subject
( thrown back casually, easily. is it really that rare for akechi to speak with someone who doesn't mince or twist their words? ...maybe. if the majority of his interactions were with interviewers and fans buttering him up and adults who probably don't take him seriously. still, ren thinks he's being held to an odd standard here. if akechi wants honest, he could just as easily talk to ryuji. thought-provoking might not be in his friend's repertoire though.
the fact that akechi knows about those welcome parties is a bit unsettling but maybe not all that surprising. he was keeping tabs on them after all. the guy had pictures. no need to dance around that, he guesses. ren shrugs his shoulders. )
It was more like a reward. The "we kicked Kamoshida's ass" celebration. But other than the food, it wasn't anything impressive. Snobby adults and... ( and...masayoshi shido, actually, now that he's remembering. ren closes his mouth, eyeing the other for a moment, then shifting his gaze ahead again. ) I'd rather be in an attic with a hotpot.
( expertly dodged! lies of omission is right. ren meets that pointed look that follows but says nothing to verbally acknowledge it. in fact, moves past it quickly, back to teasing with half a grin because that's fun, that's easy, that doesn't require him to think so much. did you come up with that idiom all by yourself, akechi-san? )
Ah, then it's because you're an insufferable know-it-all. Noted.
( throughout the night, ren continues to play at this date-but-not-date thing that even he can't really articulate why he's doing. occasionally, he drifts from akechi's side to interact with others, not introducing him if he isn't asked and pointedly aware of any of his friends that might see them in the same space, despite the reason he pulled out of his ass to give akechi for all this in the first place.
nonetheless, the evening is surprisingly amicable. chatting and light banter strung through their interactions, an ease of company that ren has to catch himself from slipping too deeply into now and again. but there he goes, he and akechi seated at a table now with two plates of food, his eyes trail from his fork to akechi's face, where something pulls a huff of soft laughter from ren's chest. )
I never knew...
no subject
[ frustrating enough that he wants to scream at him sometimes. but ren is what he could consider an equal on many levels. while honest, ryuji can't be viewed the same way. ryuji unfortunately doesn't have that dislike of wasting words and might simply say something along the lines of "shut up, will ya?" instead of building a repartee.]
Snobby adults are disgraceful. Did they shun you out? [ blinking. ] ...You put a hotpot up there and it didn't burn the room down? [ it's a joke. probably.
he actually only knew about the welcoming parties because it came up in conversation here but lacked specifics. though he suspected they'd do as much prior, being the welcoming friendly group they are. they would have never threw him one. fucking pricks. ]
That's not it at all. [ r u d e.
the matter of who akechi came with, if anyone, doesn't seem to come up in conversation with anyone else he's spoken to during the night so he never gets to point in ren's direction, which he would have if not just to thoroughly embarrass ren for his life choices and to make it well-known he doesn't always go places by himself. ren is kept in a line of sight but he never follows when he drifts away and thus doesn't interject to introduce himself. he also needs space from this. though if ren ever spares a glance back in his direction while drifting, akechi waved at him with his fingers. hello. still here.
it's entirely too pleasant the rest of the time. despite the obvious discomfort between the both of them about many things, he's the most comfortable conversing with him. it's too easy. he could see this being the most enjoyable time if there wasn't an unspoken horrific series of circumstances between them that makes him constantly question where the moment is this takes a turn for terrible. who snaps first? probably him... it's always him. ]
Knew what? [ all movement stops and the fork of food he's holding never reaches his mouth. he looks from it to ren's face, trying to guess the source of amusement and the rest of that thought. did he do something? is there food on his face? ] Have you solved the mystery of what exactly is in some of this?
no subject
( he's fortunate ren caught him because he must really be having a party not to notice and if he gets any on his very white, very easily stained suit he might just turn from james bond into james abscond. though he knows akechi has his own, ren offering his napkin is an ingrained response. his arm stretches across the small distance, cloth folded over his fingers in a manner that implies he intends to wipe it off himself - especially considering how close his hand comes to the smear - but at the last moment, his wrist turns so akechi can simply take it. )
Here.
( it's just a mistake, but there's something weirdly endearing about it. akechi is so careful about his appearance, the way he carries himself and what other people perceive. not noticing food on his face - it means for a moment, he forgot about his appearance, doesn't it? it means he's comfortable. ren is probably over-analyzing, but it's difficult not to. )
You really are much more yourself here, hm?
( just like he said at the beach, and ren can't help but think that it's refreshing. it's nice. in a way that almost threatens to disarm him. )
no subject
Ah....ha ha. Thank you very much. [ the napkin is snatched harsher than it needs to be. what the fuck, ren? he holds up one of the cleaner utensils on the table as a makeshift mirror to make sure he gets all of the escaped sauce. ]
I would like to think so. There's hardly a reason to pretend. I'm not sure getting food on my face factors into that though. Sometimes you simply get lost in thought while eating and don't realize... Not that it's a reoccurring thing.
no subject
I see...that doesn't happen to me or anyone else I've ever met, but okay.
( a quirk from a tease, and then gone again. his stare is too heavy, too weighed against the boy across from him to keep a light smile on his mouth at the moment. )
Akechi.
( ren sets his fork down, a soft clink lost in the music behind them. there's a firmness to his expression that betrays the softer quality of his tone before his gaze shifts away. he sounds almost distracted when he speaks, like his words are being directly streamed from his conscious as he thinks. )
Earlier, you were talking about honesty. You made it sound as if it's something you hold in high regard. ( his voice lowers an octave, darker and more serious as his head tips down a bit. ) But you understand why that itself is difficult for me to believe. I'm sure.
( ...he lets that hang between them for a few solid seconds, and then brings his full attention back. more towards neutral again. less angry, less bitter. )
Nonetheless, I want to take advantage of honest Akechi, and ask him why he agreed to an invitation he knows I pulled out of my ass.
no subject
[ ren's invasion of personal space here is becoming unfortunate. there's no proper way of dealing with it and he's either froze or tried to avoid it so far. he must be so touchy with his actual friends, slinging arms around each other and whatnot. ]
[ he puts the fork and napkin down, folding his hands in front of him on the table and smiling back at him while feeling the weight of a stare, like he's being judged. ]
Amamiya.
[ he is being judged. of course, it's difficult to believe a liar when he speaks of truth. but it was something he had to become to do what needed to be done... what he thought needed to be done, anyway. he doesn't expect ren to ever really buy into anything he says at this point. akechi nods at him, in agreement. yes. you can be sure about that. he knows why. it's a neutral expression he's wearing, patient. ]
It was mostly curiosity at how the thought had even crossed your mind to give one. It warranted further investigation and I wanted to go anyway. Perhaps I'd see if you'd try to rationalize your spur-of-the-moment decision instead of ever asking whatever it was you backed down on.
no subject
A lie...od thing...lea-- to a bet...ome...I want y-- th...My type...est people...
the rest is even worse. a familiar room and brief pulses of anger that are unfiltered and untamed; unbridled laughter, a blink of fear, twisted expressions.
Tu...très vil--...anger you carry...do well to rel-- it...crow.
You don't count as one of my sins. )
Rational...I do actually believe the others would like to see us getting along. ( it wasn't a lie. but it wasn't the reason, either. ren looks down at his hands, a bit surprised to find tight fists in their place. he takes care to loosen them slowly. ) It's me who isn't sure about that. From the beginning, the most rational thing was to leave each other alone, right?
( but they don't. neither of them. there are logical reasons for this - both of them have their uses here, and ren wonders if that was his reason for making attempts to interact with akechi before. there's so much he can't remember and it frustrates him, because the only things he can remember are the evidence pieces to why he and akechi shouldn't have any business beyond a gun or a knife between them.
ren opens his mouth, closes it...opens again. )
I backed down because I'm not sure what will happen if we keep doing irrational things. You say you don't have a reason to pretend anymore, but...
( but what if he finds one again? even without shido here flinging orders around, that malice was real, that came from within - akechi didn't need to be told to hate him. what does he really know about akechi, anyway? how much is he putting at stake if he makes further attempts to know him, and to show more of himself?
regardless of whether or not he receives an answer, ren pushes from his seat with a terse little breath. )
I just need a minute. I'll be back.
( it might be easier to think about this without akechi directly across from him. )
no subject
Depending on how you approach the problem, it would be. It's rational to subscribe to keeping your friends close and your enemies closer. But it's also rational to avoid me completely.
[ but however rational the latter is, neither of them would go for it. they'd always choose the former. it could be rational. there's reasons for it. to stay together because of how well they work instead of staying apart and letting the other operated with half the available resources. like great rivals in his books working together temporarily because something is bigger than the both of them... ]
But...? [ he waits. he waits and waits in a minute that feels far too long and then ren's backing down again. so frustrating. akechi's just angry about it. leaning back in his chair and looking elsewhere because watching ren walk off after he stood up is going to piss him off further. ]
[ he waves a hand at him in a slight shooing gesture. okay. go think. the breath he takes in himself is deep and exhaled through his nose quickly after. ] Alright. Take your time. [ the words are hollow. ]
1/2
akechi though...akechi. )
Goddamnit.
( he removes his glasses to rub at his eyes, pressing away the pulsing threat of a headache, and after a moment, just leaves his hand over his eyes as he thinks.
what he's doing now...is really no different from inaction, isn't it? and to ren, nothing is worse than that. the choice here is will he continue interacting with akechi, or won't he? and since he already knows the answer to that (is really kind of pathetic when it comes to how predictable his choice is), the question then becomes what is he interacting for. if it's for information, then that's what he needs to think of it as. and if more of himself or akechi spills along the way then...he can deal with it. like he's always done for everything. he can adapt. he can keep distance. no matter what akechi says, ren can always come back to the fact that he knows akechi's true nature behind those little smiles.
he just has to be careful.
another sigh, longer now and some mix of resigned and resolved. when he slips his glasses back on, it's with the intent to head back into the metaphorical lion's den, but on the way ren is - inevitably - distracted by a teary girl and her mildly-stained dress. )
2/2
but he's here and so ren has to find his balls in this dress and act on his decision. he starts by throwing up a casual little smile and using what is undoubtedly akechi's favorite greeting from him by now. )
Hey.
( hey. )
...Waiting on someone? ( ahaha... ) Must be a real asshole...
no subject
not that he wants to hang out with any of them. does he actually know other people? shit.
he gets up during the time but doesn't go too far. he just gets himself something to drink. coffee... none left. tea. he has tea and that's fine, he supposes, because he feels like he's antsy. the only other option is that punch and he's not an idiot. other people are idiots and drop several IQ points. people are clumsy and he's wearing white. he regrets his entire decision to stray from the table.
so he ends up back at said table, jacket put over the back of his chair - drying. it's a loss. sleeves rolled up above the elbows. tap a foot. tick tick tick. ren's just going to fucking ditch him. would he blame him? ...yes. yes, he would. that's the opposite of a gentleman thief's actions and he should change his entire costume.
he didn't but he's still a disgrace. don't hey him, asshole. insufferable prick. deplorable stain on planet earth and whatever planet they're currently residing on. a creatively deficient being with an offensively uninspired personality and an inability to
not look good in a dress.
he picks his head up off his hand, looking at him red-faced (all from the increasing rage, he'd assume) and shocked. his eyes dart all over ren's being, taking the oddly pleasant and alluring sight in. what surprisingly slender shoulders he has. despite not being what he arrived in, he fits perfectly into the dress' silhouette. as if it was tailored for him. not a detail off this is going unnoticed. can't look away. ]
You know you have a stain on your dress, right?
no subject
his attention lifts at the question, and it takes him a moment to actually pull out of his own observations and understand akechi is remarking on the dress. ah. )
You know you lost your jacket, right?
( there's a joke about the gun show in here but that's in very poor taste and it's probably better if ren doesn't put any more awkward attention on akechi's arms than he already has. however, he is still staring. )
...It's noisy here. Let's go outside. ( he turns. points in the general direction of the main hall. ) There's a balcony on the second floor.
( a balcony that is only accessed through a staircase at the bottom of which a very red and restrictive rope had been placed, but ren doesn't seem to care about this fact. )
no subject
I'm aware.
[ akechi carefully stands up, taking a sip of that tea before moving to walk beside him. he debates offering an arm, just because that'd be somewhat amusing and that's when he notices this is an open-back dress. and he's following his spine. slight curvature of it - because ren's posture is a little poor, isn't it? he has good skin, there are so few imperfections. he's looking for them. ] Are we sneaking off to forbidden places now? [ he says it with a lowered voice. shh. ]
[ technically, it's trespassing and he could give ren a ticket - if he weren't going along with it. there's a stray thought to push ren off the balcony to see if he's close enough to a cat to land on his feet even in fancier heels than usual. ]
no subject
if you idiots stare at each any harder your eyeballs are going to fall out of your skulls. )
So am I.
( good, now that they're both aware of their respective outfit upgrades and how very enticing and exposed each other's skin is, let's attempt to move on here because ren needs to focus on being...not a clusterfuck of a human being. he doesn't like it. unlike his companion, he won't even attempt to find flaws on akechi's person - he can already see, very much knows there's nothing overtly imperfect about him. it's part what spelled ren's demise from the very beginning.
he leads them to the edge of the staircase, smoothly slipping into the shadow of a nearby curtain, draped across the wall. )
Yeah. Just like old times. ( ren reaches behind him with his hands, drawing the fabric of the curtain forward to cover both akechi and himself, listening for the passing footsteps of chaperones and fellow attendees. he smirks, lowers his voice, too. ) Or have you forgotten how to sneak around now that you're living the boring life of the law?
( once the coast is clear, he pinches the very edge of akechi's sleeve - doesn't grab, because that's too familiar, but it doesn't matter. it's still much too close, enough that he can feel the tension of muscles through the fabric and through his gloves, pressed against his knuckles. he's trying not to pay attention to that. the loosening of his grip halfway up the stairs could speak of a losing battle. )
no subject
akechi follows behind slowly, grinning all the while while he watches him. ren sneaks into a shadow, unnoticed. akechi simply walks over like he belongs, unnoticed, until the curtain is moved to hide him as well. ]
I was at this far longer than you. Sneaking comes in handy on both sides of the law, you know. [ he wags a finger at him lightly, playfully. ] I wouldn't forget.
[ ren's close again but pinching fabric almost daintily, like akechi's skin might burn him if he went for it and just grabbed his arm, even with the gloves on. he'd be offended if he wasn't sure the contact would burn them both. unless ren just went for manhandling and yanking him but that's an entirely different unwelcomed contact. akechi's obediently going along with the slightest tug this contact is providing, following him so closely. looking over his shoulder, a look out. maintain focus. the grip slacks and akechi pulls away several inches away from him before following again. ]
I can already hear the sweet silence of a space free of an unpracticed band.
no subject
( don't joke like that. humor is his default though, the first wall of defense when distance is breached and he can feel the sigh in his throat when akechi reclaims some after being released from the pinch of ren's fingers. thankfully, the air comes out more as a chuckling sound, softly amused - he might wish their words had been drowned out by shitty flutes and violin when this interaction is over.
the night is crisp and cools the skin over ren's back, a highly exposed area he's quick to turn from akechi's line of sight. he leans against the railing so he can look him face to face. there's some quiet before he speaks, the steadiness of his gaze bearing like a weight upon the bit of distance between them before his voice breaks through it. )
What you said about keeping your enemies close, I don't know if I wanna subscribe to that. It didn't work out too great for me last time. ( they're not friends, exactly. but neither are they enemies, exactly. not here. or so ren would like to think. )
But I'm not going to avoid you either. There are some things I just don't think I can talk to anyone else about but you. No matter what we are, that's the truth of it. I don't know why. It's just how it is.
( his hands slide in along the railing, closer to his waist before his fingers tighten their grip. when his head dips, the glare is briefly lifted from his lenses. )
Please don't make me regret accepting that truth.
( don't make me regret this curiosity. inching over distance that has every right to remain wide and uncrossed. another beat of silence, and then ren folds his arms, absently noting that the soft material of the gloves feels nice against his skin. he exhales through his nose, deep and slow, before averting his eyes. )
You have more than one Persona, like me. That's what I found out from Ryuji. ( right. but akechi knows that. he's known it all along. when ren speaks again, it isn't really accusal, so much as seeking confirmation. ) You already know what I want to ask you about, don't you?
( if they're as similar as he's assuming, then akechi saw it too, directly from his perch far-end and wholly away from the rest of them. every time. )
no subject
[ that's right, phantom thieves. he doesn't always get blackmail material but when he does it's in broad daylight. humor is easy. an ice-breaker. ren responds well to it. he gets the feeling he won't be able to keep it up once deeper words start flowing from their mouths.
there is a slight breeze. ren's facing him and he's looking down at the slightest flow the skirt picks up from it before meeting him eye to eye. the distance becomes a little wider, when akechi chooses not to follow him to the railing.
he lingers back somewhat, standing with enough casualness placed in his posture to not be perfectly straight. hands folded in front of him. smile at the ready. untrained eyes would never pick up how very tense he becomes past this once ren ruins the silence he called sweet. ]
[ didn't work out great for whom? ] You say that like it didn't go according to your plan. [ they never tried to stop him, he still insists in his head. the guards beating and drugging him is highly unfortunate but that wasn't his fault. he wouldn't have wanted them to do that. that's disgraceful.
he says nothing at the next part, because ren is a man of few words and all of it counts. he agrees wholeheartedly. it's that connection akechi has been so sure of. if they can't share with each other then they won't share at all. ]
Denying the truth leads to the biggest regrets of all.
[ steady. it has to be faced and sought out. always always always. he'll never refuse to believe that, even if it hurts. he did it once before and where did it get him? dead. he's lacing his fingers too tightly now. holding his breath. go own then. ask away. he knows you have questions.
he still can't look at him, even while finally asking. sort of asking. he presents it for akechi to give the information himself. he knows what he wants to ask, of course. ]
Two. [ just two personas. he's putting his cards on the table. ] I'm going to ask back, if you don't mind. [ it's confirmation. validation that ren was right to ask. he knows. he saw. every time and the others remained clueless. ren didn't want to speak of it and it would give akechi away at the time to ask, even if he so desperately wanted to.
he lowers his voice, his head canting to the left. questions he's had of his own up until now bubbling to the surface and cracking that expression he put on to brace himself. ren has answers to secrets he's been locked out of. akechi would be more than happy to exchange the ones he has back. ]
Is it an open invitation for you? Is that why you have so many?

It didn't. Not really. ( under his skirt, ren is tapping the toe of his shoe against the floor. an impatient, slightly nervous gesture he doesn't realize he's doing. ) Trying to survive a bullet with some crazy Scooby-Doo plan wasn't my first idea. It's just the one we ended up needing.
( i would have preferred everything before that to be true. the smiles, the conversations, that what we built would have meant more to you than your orders. understanding akechi was an enemy had turned his stomach in a way so many other things had, but the disappointment - the anger - it felt much heavier with the weight of everything that came before that understanding. plan a was the hope akechi really would switch sides, the impractical plan he never shared outside of his own heart.
he wishes things could have been different. they work so much better on the same side.
ren looks up from where his attention had fallen off to the side in thought, rounded with interest over this bit of wisdom akechi speaks. it sounds so certain, the type of confidence that comes with personal experience. but he loses the opportunity to seek elaboration when another secret is suddenly uncovered. )
Two... ( his eyes narrow, some mix of doubt and confusion. the former carefully dissipates, as akechi really has no reason to lie to him at this point in the conversation, but only having two...it raises more questions in his mind than answers.
he's still thinking on it, on what that means about akechi's power, his bonds, how things work in comparison to ren's own experience, but at open invitation, he's broken from his musings with a sudden sound. almost like a laugh, but too sharp and with little humor. )
That makes it sound so easy. I had to put a lot of work into getting so many, and I don't exactly get the five-star treatment from anyone in there. The atmosphere makes it seem like it's supposed to be calming, but I always feel like I'm trapped in some blue nightmare. ( his head tilts, opposite way of akechi's ) Are you implying they don't talk to you at all?
no subject
[ when did they all find him out and make a harsh judgement call that he was the bad guy in their minds? how long were they lying to his face? knowing he was being talked about behind his back in a negative sense, while a feeling he's known his entire life, has never been so upsetting before. akechi figured out their plan - the phone, sae's involvement, the cognitive - but how long they've had that plan still eludes him. was it day one they were judging him? what's the excuse of the righteous ones who try to save everyone for not bothering with this one? bastards.
he adjusts his footing slightly, trying to stand straighter than he already is. yes. two. ren seems baffled by it somehow and he doesn't know why. what does that give away about him? akechi gets caught up trying to figure it out, looking at ren with wide questioning eyes until he's laughing. then he switches to glaring in a second. what? ]
I hardly knew they could even speak. [ he unlaces his fingers, waving a hand next to his head and a tone he's incapable of keeping his frustration out of. shaking his head. more than an implication. ] I've tried just about everything and they have always ignored me. I could scream in their face and they won't even blink. Every being, supernatural or not, having a preference for you is quite infuriating, you know. I saw you walk in like your name was listed on that clipboard as a VIP... I would honestly welcome that blue nightmare. It wasn't the prison.

At this point, I guess it doesn't really matter.
( though that glare sends ice down his spine, ren meets it head-on. he's more careful, observant, everything from body language to individual words to their meaning as a whole. the way his brow crinkles is a wordless testament to confusion. it had always been strange to him that he was the only one, that even after the others had awakened to their power, he was still the only one - hearing now that akechi, more similar to him in ways that none of the others are, was still not as aware as him is discouraging. but more than that, ren is piqued by how aggravated he sounds. as if this is something that has been boiling, festering towards ren and only now allowed to bubble over. )
Preference...? ( what is he talking about? ren straightens from the balcony, quiet for a moment as he stares, trying to puzzle out where this sudden emotion is coming from. it's surprising to him that the velvet room attendees would ignore him, but akechi can't seriously be jealous over this? ) A prison is exactly what it is. Literally. ( he holds one hand out, the other touching his chest. ) The man inside told me that room reflected the state of my heart. I saw myself as a prisoner of society, and I needed to be "rehabilitated."
( a quick exhale, as if the word itself frustrates him. he's certainly tired of hearing it. )
To be honest, I don't know if that's really true, but cooperating has always had the better outcome, so I don't question it anymore - he never gives me answers that aren't cryptic word-salad anyway.
( ren pauses in his explanation, thinking on what akechi said about being blatantly ignored. it was the exact opposite for him, dragged there and thrown into a journey he didn't ask for. he fought it at first, but it's as he said, cooperating is really the only choice he has and he doesn't regret it. that room, the voice in his head, they guide him; they've led him to his power, his own path, and his friends.
but akechi... )
But if it is true, and you aren't allowed inside... ( his hand falls slowly to his side, fingers curling into his palm as his voice lowers, the corner of his eye watching akechi carefully. ) Even if you say you've tried to speak to them, maybe...maybe the problem is because your heart is closed. ( ren lifts his head with a little more confidence, though his tone remains quiet. )
They can't help you because you won't let them.

You're right. Nothing really matters anymore. [ with a sigh. it doesn't. it really doesn't and yet he's still trying to get every little detail about it. just more fuel to the fire when every choice was already made. then they'll leave here and forget gaining any understanding of him. rinse. repeat. it doesn't matter. he still shot the guy in the head.
ren's the favorite. ren, drugged beyond belief and by no means trustworthy, could convince sae niijima of something he, someone she sees at work every single day, openly hinted at. someone would had a cat guide him through a place he had to traverse alone. who gained friends so easily with similar backgrounds while akechi was surrounded by people and couldn't get a single one to say hello first. he got a criminal record and gained a loving family unit out of it. and yet ren seems surprised even supernatural twins like him better. everything handed to him.
the tension is obvious and the glare remains. he ends up folding his arms again, clenching his jaw once when ren talks about the prison like it's this horrifying environment. eerie, yes. it's terrifying but it's also one of the only places in the world someone seemed to believe he was capable of accomplishing something.
apparently not. ]
That man must have lied to me if that prison is reflecting your heart. To think I was being fooled even there... [ that actually really hurts. why would it do that? he doesn't ease up on glaring, does it more actually, but further confusion is put behind it and he stops aiming it directly at ren. almost looking right past him and trying to wrap his mind around the meaning behind it. was he given up on so they grabbed someone new? just like that? or was there something else going on?
ren was pulled in and cooperates because there isn't much of a choice. while akechi desperately grasped at smoke and was refused. tried harder. and harder. and harder. driven by jealousy and anger and denied everything. he has to work for it all. he's powerful but it's this destructive force and ren keeps being handed things he never asked for so he's...not. why would- ]
Shut up! That's not it. [ a sharp snap out of his thoughts. the focus shifting back to ren completely. ren's tone remains quiet. akechi gets louder. it's an immediate defensive denial of the suggestion. that would imply it's his fault. having a closed heart. ren thinks him heartless. how dare he. ]
You can't refuse help that's never offered in the first place. What is behind that thought process? Do they tell you to welcome everything in with open arms?
